A Romantic stay at Mi Amor
2018-08-27

I love traveling to warm climate locations where I can wear a bikini all day everyday, to breakfast, lunch, happy hour, dinner, and there’s no judgement. So this year for my birthday, I decided to celebrate in the sunshine and somewhere I can wear my birthday (swim) suit.

Last year, Ben took me to the Maldives, Six Senses Lamuu (Check out my Maldives’ post here). This year I chose Tulum, Mexico. Tulum is in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, with the best preserved Mayan ruins. Located just a short one hour thirty minute drive from Cancun.

Ben is the ultimate planner, he researches everything and I mean E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G. He reads reviews, blogs, etc. for restaurants (to make sure they’re vegan friendly), hotels, transportation, beaches, activities. He wants to know what other vacationers are doing. So I leave everything up to him.

Ben surprised me with the most romantic hotel in Tulum...Mi Amor.

“Experience romance. Experience love. Experience a dream. Experience Mi Amor…” - Jacquline Aere, General Manager at Mi Amor.

Hotel Mi Amor is a small luxury boutique hotel and spa. It’s an adults only hotel with a total of 18 rooms. The hotel is set atop of a rocky cliff where you can sit above and watch the waves crash.

Our room was intimate and quaint, with a view of the ocean right outside our door. We even had our own private little pool (ok every room has their own mini pool). I knew for the next seven days we were going to have a relaxing stay at Mi Amor.

Breakfast

Every morning I woke up bright eyed with the sun, excited for the day. Breakfast was my favorite time of the day (included in your stay at Mi Amor).

We started our mornings with a hot decaf coffee with a side of steamed almond milk and a fresh juice. Every morning, there was a fresh “juice of the day”, my favorite was the watermelon juice. And of course a mimosa.

We ordered fresh fruit to start. Mexico has the best fruit. If you’ve ever traveled to Mexico, you know that the fruit is so fresh and juicy. I loved the presentation of the fruit plates. They thinly sliced the fruit and laid them delicately on top of each other.

The staff was really accommodating of our vegan diet, they offered to make us something off the menu: avocado toast with a simple salad. The sliced avocado was laid nicely on a toasted rye bread. So simple and so delicious!

When I was feeling something a bit heartier, I went with the oatmeal with strawberries. Breakfast at Mi Amor was the perfect start of a relaxing day.

Chill

We spent most our days relaxing in our private pool or lounging on the cabana beds. There were about 7 cabana beds facing the ocean. I loved laying on the cabana beds, sipping skinny margaritas, snacking on chips and guacamole while reading Harry Potter. The sound of the waves plus the warmth of the sun was so relaxing. The service at Mi Amor was exceptional, we were always attended to. There was always someone making sure we had a beverage or a snack.

Happy Hour

On our arrival day, we arrived just in time for happy hour. On their cocktail menu, there was a list of champagne cocktails (MY FAV!) that named after famous couples. My favorite was “Ross and Rachel” - champagne with grapefruit and basil.

Also on the cocktail menu, under the “Treat Yourself” section, the cocktails are infused with doterra healing oils to awaken your senses. Fun and unique names like; “Stay present” (helps refocus the mind) and “Forever Young” (improves the skin).

Happy hour is everyday from 5pm-7pm with 2 for 1 drinks. We enjoyed a cocktail at happy hour every evening before heading out to dinner.

Dinner

The restaurant at Mi Amor is the one of the highest rated restaurant in Tulum. Chef Paul Bentley and his team have created a menu inspired by French and Italian cuisine. The staff were aware that we are vegan and recommended a few items on the menu that were vegan and which items were customizable to become vegan.

Colibri Spa

Ben and I enjoyed a “Romance” treatment package. This package included a 70 minute massage, 20 minute flower bath and champagne. The massage was amazing, the massage therapist was able to get most of my knots out of my shoulders. She even gave me a mini facial at the very end. Once the 70 minutes was up, we made our way towards the flower bath. We relaxed in the warm bath filled with beautiful flowers and drank champagne till we were perfectly pruning. Colibri Spa was the cherry on top of our relaxing and romantic stay at Mi Amor.

Explore

After you’re all done chilling out and feeling a bit restless, it’s time to get out of the hotel and explore! Mi Amor offers hotel guests bicycles for rent. Rentals are $12 a day per bike. Right down the way from Mi Amor is the beach and one of the Mayan Ruins. The main town of Tulum is also located about a 15 minute bicycle ride away.

Simon, Mi Amor’s concierge recommended a private tour that takes you on the ultimate Tulum experience: tour the Mayan ruins, swim in a cenote, and have lunch with the Mayan community. We couldn’t pass it up, read all about it here: The Ultimate Tulum Experience

Sleep

The bed at Mi Amor is so big and comfy, I never wanted to get out of bed. The bed faced sliding window door that opened out into the ocean. I easily woke up with the sun every morning.

One of the best parts of staying at Hotel Mi Amor was, every night, turn down service would bring a thermos of hot tea and placed it on our bed with a sweet note. Each night was a different note and a different tea. The tea was the perfect ending to a perfect day in Tulum.

Mi Amor was the perfect getaway, it had the right amount of romance, relaxing, and fun. I would highly recommend checking out Hotel Mi Amor for your stay in Tulum.
